We saw Jack Willis as King Lear, we first saw him last season as LBJ in All the Way. He was very powerful as LBJ and equally so as King Lear.

This is a modern and spare production (at one point Lear watches a flat screen TV)  Lear asks his daughters ” who loves me best ” Cordelia his youngest daughter will not play the game and is banished.  I wanted to see more of Codelia played by Sofia Jean Gomez in her first season at OSF, but she only appears at the beginning and end of the play.

The Thomas Theatre is very intimate and the intensity of the story makes us the audience feel like part of the action in this often gory and emotional play.

Last Year I saw the award winning ”Ethel” a documentary about Ethel Kennedy made by her youngest daughter Rory.

This year there are 91 films, on a  wide variety of subjects and from many different countries. Documentaries, short films and feature length films, many of these are world premiers.

These are films that you will probably not see anywhere else but here in Ashland. There is something for everyone.

I have always loved this story of  a working class girl Eliza Doolittle who meets an upper class Professor  Henry Higgins out side a Theatre where she is selling flowers. With the help of the  wonderful music of Lerner and Loewe we are transported to early 1900′s London.

In this production there are all of  the songs that we love and are familiar with.  Rachael Warren as Eliza has a beautiful voice  and Jonathan Haugen as Henry Higgins has great comic timing and a much better voice than Rex Harrison in the film version. I especially loved Ken Robinson as Freddy Eynsford-Hill he was a real hoot.

The musical is a sheer delight, it had me hooked at the very beginning. I came out of the Theatre singing ” I could have danced all night ” and as the next line of the song goes I would have begged for more. Three hours was not enough for me I did wish for more.

This season promises to be very exciting.   From William Shakespeare we have King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Nights Dream and Cymbeline.

Two Trains Running By August Wilson,  The Unfortunates, an award winning musical,  Heart of Robin Hood, about Robin and his merry men,   Liquid Plain, the 18th century struggle of slaves for freedom,  The Tenth Muse, Commissioned by OSF by a rising Mexican playwright,  A Streetcar Named Desire, the Pulitzer Prize winning classic,  and the wonderful musical My Fair Lady.

Previews start on February 15th. The Grand Opening of the 2013 season will be on Friday February 22nd.

The much anticipated 78th year of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival  promises to be a season of abundance, with a wonderful mix of comedy, romance and also tragedy.

Ashland 20th Annual Festival of Light took place on the day after Thanksgiving. The festivities kicked off with the Siskiyou Singers at 3pm, there were lots of Choirs and Bands all afternoon on the Festival Stage. At 5pm the Festival of Light Parade began at Ashland Library and wended it’s way along Main Street to the Plaza

 where Santa Claus and Mrs Claus, Rudolph and the Elves( lovely young ladies who were dressed in short red costumes, who danced there way down the parade route just in front of Santa’s sleigh) all made there way up to the balcony of Alex’s Restaurant to lead caroling to the thousands of merry makers. Santa counted down, then  switched on the Grand Illuminations.

More singing followed with a concert by fellow Innkeeper Greg Capp singing holiday songs. This is a fabulous event every year and well worth traveling to see.

Now is the time to be in Ashland,  the Festival of Lights takes place the day after Thanksgiving with a Parade meandering down Main Street after dark. After the parade Santa and Mrs Santa and their Rain Deers switch  on all the Holiday Lights in down town Ashland. There is a great music concert in the Plaza and then more music of every kind in all the restaurants and bars around town. Great fun!! And a wonderful way to kick off the Holiday season.  Join us and have a great time.

Oregon Cabaret Theatre is presenting Song and Dance ( American Show Business from Vaudeville to today )

The show begins on the Vaudeville stage and moves forward in time to modern Broadway shows.

This is an original Cabaret production featuring Christopher George Patterson and Kymberli Colbourn, follow them as they share their own journeys as performers.

The show will high energy dance numbers and some of the best show tunes.

The show will be performed until November 4th.
