Gil’s Growler Station now open in Ashland Oregon

July 21st, 2015 by Julie

gils growler

Gil’s Growler Station is now open in Ashland Oregon.

There is a new place in town to sample more than 23 craft beers here in Ashland Oregon.  Gil’s Growler Station ( A growler is a large jug that contains about a half gallon of beer) has opened next to Ruby’s Restaurant on Pioneer Street. They are both owned by the same couple who started Ruby’s four years ago.  Christian Senf and Aura Streett thought that opening a casual, fun and friendly place to have a drink and some food was just what was needed in Ashland.

Those of you who have stopped for lunch at Ruby’s know that the food is really good with locally grown organic produce. You can also have some of the same menu items at Gil’s Growler, tasty nacho’s, roasted chicken and lots of different delicious sandwiches.

Gil’s also serves Wine, Hard Cider, Meade and Kombucha ( which is a fermented tea.)

Stop by and check it out.

Belle Fiore Winery in beautiful Ashland Oregon

June 20th, 2015 by Julie

slide1 belle fiore

Belle Fiore Winery located in beautiful Ashland Oregon.  We at the Blue Moon really like the wine that the Belle Fiore winery produces.

The land was purchased  by the Kerwin family in early 2000, they planted grape verities from France, Spain and Italy between 2007 and 2009 and opened up the tasting pavilion and event rooms to the public in 2013.

With spectacular vistas and majestic mountain views the winery is a wonderful place to visit with it’s classic French Chateau architecture.  But of course it’s all about the wine…. In the tasting room you can sample Syrah, Cabernet, and Pinot Noir wines and also the Belle Arte Montepulciano which won a silver award from the 2015 San Francisco Chronicle competition. Other Belle Fiore wines are also winners of gold and silver awards from the West Coast Wine Competition.

The winery serves delicious food and wine both at lunchtime and dinner. During the summer months meals can be served outside on the terrace overlooking the stunning vineyard. While having dinner or just a glass of wine there is always live music every evening from Wednesday through Sunday to serenade you.

When you are in Ashland go to Belle Fiore it’s well worth the trip.

Blue Moon Bed and Breakfast Kitchen Garden

June 10th, 2015 by Julie

The first week in May was a perfect time to plant our kitchen garden at the Blue Moon B&B.

At the Blue Moon kitchen garden last year we only had one raised bed and planted it with both tomatoes and herbs, the tomatoes took over the bed and there was not really room for the herbs. This year we added another raised bed just for the herbs.

We have four tomato plants growing in one bed, two of them are cherry tomatoes one red and one yellow, also an early tomato and a heirloom verity, we hope to have lots and lots of tomatoes for breakfast at the Inn this summer.

In the herb raised bed we have thyme, chives, sage, parsley and 13 sweet basil plants, so we should have more than enough herbs for the kitchen.

When you are in Ashland Oregon. Come to see our garden at the Blue Moon Bed & Breakfast.

“Pericles” at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival

March 26th, 2015 by Julie

” Pericles” at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Detail_2015_Pericles three pirates

Pericles by William Shakespeare is a play not often performed these days, in Shakespeare lifetime it was wildly popular, but over the years it has fallen out of favor with audiences.
The play is a swashbuckling adventure fairy tale with rich characters of pirates, wicked Queens and bawdy brothel keepers.
It is a story of birth, death, resurrection and love.
It’s both romantic, comic and tragic, a veritable roller coaster ride in which Pericles the Prince of Tyre ( played superbly  by Wayne T. Carr ) takes you, the audience with him on a journey to find his destiny. Along the way he finds and marries then loses his Princess and his daughter at sea. He faces ambition, hatred and loss. With many implausible events and complicated twists and turns to the plot.
In a very compelling scene, Pericles is drowning at sea, it really feels like you are being tossed as he is by the stormy  rolling waves.
The director Joseph Haj has done wonderful job of producing a mesmerizing and dynamic spectacle. It is a visually and musically stunning  play with lush original music and songs and luminous staging.
We both loved this play, it grabbed us from the beginning. The play is immensely moving. At times it is very sad, also hilariously funny and like all good fairy tales, has a happy ending.
A play definitely  not to be missed.

Spring is here at the Blue Moon

March 12th, 2015 by Julie

japanese-gardens spring mt ashland dafodils helleborus spring

Spring is here at the Blue Moon,  Ashland is bathed in sunshine and warmth, the weather is glorious, the trees are in full bloom as are the spring flowers, this weather makes you want to go out into the garden, dig in the dirt and plant lots of flowers and shrubs.

In our garden at the Inn, the Helleborus and Daffodils are blooming and the Grape Hyacinth will soon be spreading a lovely carpet of blue flowers over the front yard. I do love this time of year and it’s promise of the long days of summer sun ahead.

In our back garden at the Inn we removed a fast growing giant  Sequoia,  it was planted as a sapling about 10 years ago..  and was growing about 6 feet per year the sequoia was outgrowing the space and encroaching onto the grass area. Our gardener cut the tree down last December ( we tried to give it to anyone who could use it as a Christmas tree but know one wanted it ) then the stump was removed.

Now in it’s place is a beautiful Bartlett Pear tree which hopefully will produce lots of pears later this year. We can look forward to some delicious pear cakes and breakfast dishes, I will put my thinking cap on ( this is an English saying ) and come up with some new recipes!!

Soon the Inn will be full of guests excited about the 2015 spectacular season of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival,

So far this season the plays that Jean-Pierre and I have seen have been truly superb and definitely not to be missed.
